Turkish Demonstrative Pronouns

Turkish uses three main demonstrative pronouns:

  • Bu: This (near the speaker)
  • Şu: That (near the listener)
  • O: That (far from both speaker and listener)

Usage

  1. As pronouns:

    • Bu güzel. (This is beautiful.)
    • Şu ilginç. (That is interesting.)
    • O büyük. (That is big.)
  2. As adjectives:

    • Bu kitap (This book)
    • Şu araba (That car)
    • O ev (That house)

Plurals

Turkish demonstrative pronouns have plural forms:

  • Bunlar (These)
  • Şunlar (Those - near)

Case Suffixes

Demonstrative pronouns can take case suffixes:

  • Şuna (To that - dative)

Formal vs. Informal

Unlike some languages, Turkish doesn't distinguish between formal and informal demonstrative pronouns.
