Types of Conditional Sentences in Turkish
Type 1: Real Conditional
- Uses the simple present tense in the if-clause and future tense in the main clause
- Example: "Eğer yağmur yağarsa, evde kalacağım." (If it rains, I will stay at home.)
Type 2: Unreal Conditional (Present)
- Uses the past tense in the if-clause and conditional mood in the main clause
- Example: "Param olsaydı, yeni bir araba alırdım." (If I had money, I would buy a new car.)
Type 3: Unreal Conditional (Past)
- Uses the past perfect tense in the if-clause and past conditional in the main clause
- Example: "Daha çok çalışsaydım, sınavı geçerdim." (If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.)
Mixed Conditional
- Combines different types of conditionals
- Example: "Dün erken yatsaydım, şimdi yorgun olmazdım." (If I had gone to bed early yesterday, I wouldn't be tired now.)
Conditional Suffixes
- "-sa/-se" is added to the verb stem in the if-clause
- "-dı/-di/-du/-dü" is used for past tense conditionals
- "-ır/-ir/-ur/-ür" or "-ar/-er" for present tense conditionals
Word Order
- The if-clause can come before or after the main clause
- "Eğer" (if) is optional and often omitted in casual speech
